Word Macro Viruses

Explains that the user has a Word Macro virus, and what they can do about it.

If the macros in EasyHTML/Help are not working your machine could be infected with "WM/CAP" virus (WM means "Word Macro") This is all that the Dr. Solomons antivirus toolkit says:

WM/CAP Virus

It is somewhat infectious, and results in minor damage (30 minutes repair time). An "other" form of infection takes place. The virus is not memory-resident. It has minimum stealth capability. This virus is not encrypted. The virus changes data.

It removes all user macros from the Global Template Normal.dot and removes the options File Templates, Tools Macro and Tools Customise from the menus. Dr Solomons AVTK (or WinGuard in an auto repairing version) can remove the virus from a document but it cannot restore the damage to normal.dot - if you don't have a backup you have to delete normal.dot and rebuild it from the default which Word will create. It also bypasses most of the tricks you can do to stop unidentified viruses.

The only way to protect your normal.dot if you don't have a suitable on-access scanner running (or if you access the infected file via Netware Client 32) is to write protect normal.dot - if you aren't in the habit of making frequent changes this is not a bad idea anyway.

Every Word document you have opened since contracting the virus will now be infected! You will need to run a disinfection program on your whole PC and then reinstall EasyHTML/Help.

You might try http://www.drsolomon.com, but I don't think their software is available as shareware. They have a memory resident program (WinGuard) which intercepts viruses on the fly, as they are loaded - thus preventing accidental infection of your PC - We use it all the time - one cannot afford to take risks these days!

It costs us about £200 per year to have monthly upgrades of the virus protection software.

You might also like to try using MacAffee virus protection - it is available as shareware and is cheaper to buy.

Good luck!!
